constructing the chibi Mermaid Cartoon
The reason we learn how to construct cartoons, rather than merely copying them, is so that we can then change her position, and place her in different settings, viewing her from multiple angles. The Construction lines are drawn here in a different color, so that you can see the process, but for your drawing, use a pencil and draw them lightly, so they're easy to erase later.
- Begin with basic shapes
- (sphere for the head, cylinders & cones
for the torso and hips, & simple lines
for the limbs. - The center line for the spine shows the direction and action of the character
- Add cylinders for the arms, legs, etc.,
- Then begin adding basic shapes like the fins, flower, hair, circles for the eyes, position of clothes, the flower, etc.
- Finalize which features you want to keep by darkening in the features
- Remember to keep the construction lines light, so they're easy to erase later, before coloring the final.
Color the final.
The original cartoon (displayed in our classroom), was colored with magic markers. After the final was scanned, additional color was added with Photoshop.
